SCOV Mixed Player Ladder (MPL)

How it works

The purpose of the ladder format is to group players together of nearly similar ability.  The ladder can accommodate all skill levels and is open to any club member who registers (male or female).

There will be 4 Players on each court,  – Play will be 3 sets total.   After each set, partners will rotate staying on the same court —each player will play with, and against, the 3 other  players.

SCHEDULE

Friday’s at the Mountain View courts  2:30 pm.

Unscheduled Play may be any time 4 players agree.  Follow the rules and report the scores which will be recorded.

SIGN UP (by date)

  • Players must sign up to play On the Club web site scovTennis.com
  • Sign ups must be done 48 hours before play  and may be canceled, without penalty, up to 48 hours before play time.

SCORING

  • 2 winning partners each get  +1 point  for each set won
  • 2 losing partners each get minus 1 ( -1) point
  • Those not playing receive 0 points and keep their current rank.
  •  A no-show absence will result in minus 3 points (to encourage responsibility). Such an absence deprives the other 3 players a chance to play and also wastes their time.  To keep the average score at 50 the other 3 players will receive 1 point each.

RANKING

  • Scoring is designed to keep the average rank at 50.   Scores are tabulated and ranked after play.
  • Ranks will not be widely published but any player can request to see their ranking and scores for the year-to-date.
  • Returning players will keep their previous rank.

SETS

  • To play 3 sets in 2 hours there are some shortcuts:
  • Sets are regular(to 6 by 2) but with a 7 point tiebreaker at 5-5.
  • Games are played with a maximum of 2 “adds”.  Game is decided by the 3rd deuce serve – receiving team chooses which side receives (deuce or add side)
  • Prior to play and before each set, and when all 4 players agree, the games/sets may be altered to mutually agreed rules. The 3rd set will be a 10 point tiebreaker if any 1 player makes that call. Other players should respect the call.   Players generally know when they have lost energy or it is too hot.
  • Rotation    A suggested rotation for sets is as follows:  The first player listed for a court will play with the 4th listed player, then the 3rd, and then the 2nd listed player

BALLS

  • On each court the player with the highest rank(first on the list) will provide a new can of balls.  That player will receive $0.50 from each of the other 3 players.  Used balls can be used if all agree.

REPORTING

  • Each court is responsible to inform the coordinator of results either in-person or by email(send to scovmpl@gmail.com).  Failure to inform the coordinator may give all four players 0 points.

COURT ASSIGNMENTS

  • For each session,  players are assigned according to their rank – the top 4 ranks are placed in rank order onto the first court –and so on.
  • Coordinator will email court assignments 1 day before scheduled play.
  • If the last court has less than 4 players the coordinator may reach out to other registered players to attempt to fill the court.   If a court cannot be filled, names will be drawn at random and they will be notified that they will not play for that session.   A “bumped” player will never be bumped more than once per month.   The random choice is made so that the lowest ranked players will not fall off the schedule every time there are not enough players

OTHER

  • Coordinator has final discretion for scoring rain-outs and other such rare issues.
